I remember talking to James Ford from Simian Mobile Disco last year about how the music industry could end up pulling apart into two extremes. Mass and niche. Instead of the long tail and a gradual curve and decay it will become more polarized than that with mass X Factor pop fare at one end and super-niche band-2-fan communities at the other end. The middle will eventually disappear. More thoughts to come on this.
